‘‘Food is medicine, Medicine is not food’’
Food articles are primarily classified depending upon their chemical composition namely carbohydrate, protein, fat, minerals, vitamins and water. It can be classified also on basis of taste and biological properties.
The universe is composed of five elements- space, air, fire, water and earth. Everything in the universe possess six tastes- bitter (space and air), astringent (air and earth), pungent (air and fire), sour (fire and water), salt (fire and earth) and sweet (water and earth) either in visible or non visible form.
The whole body is composed about 13 types of channels of circulation through which basic tissue elements and waste products move from one place to another constantly and uninterruptedly. These are the channels of air, water, food ingredients, urine, feces, sweat, plasma and hemoglobin; and they carrying nutrients to the muscle tissues, fat tissues, bone tissues, bone marrows, and for sperms or ovum. If the movements of these channels are stopped due to some internal and external causes, the wastes accumulate and impair the activities of other channels.
The major causes of diseases are accumulation of wastes and toxins which are developed silently with over eating, improper cooking or unnatural dietary habits. Disease process can be reversed and cured by a simple change of diet. The quantity and quality of food to be taken depends upon the body constitution, individual’s power of digestion and metabolism.

Light food articles are predominating with air and fire. They are stimulator of appetite and less harmful.
Those dominated by water and earth are heavy. They are suppressors of appetite and also harmful if taken in excess.

Sufficient quantity of food taken in helps the individual to bring about strength, happiness and longevity without making disturbance in the equilibrium of various systems of body.
There may be considerable variation in the body’s requirements for food in illness, age, activity and other factors affecting food absorption, utilization and excretion.

The average span of life of individual has gone up now due to improved nutritional practice.
